pilot court-martialed for rape of a female officer i hawaii were dropped. the fallen officers were investigating a new accusation that he broke in a coworker's house and tried to sexually assault her. the funeral is planned for a week from yesterday at 11:00 next thursday at kaiser permanente arena. next thursday at 11 a.m. now, we have been hearing more stories about stray bullets coming out over the last couple of days. we'll talk a little bit more about that in the next half hour. live in santa cruz, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> do authorities have any idea whether the detectives had information before they went to the suspect's house? >> reporter: they had limited information investigating a

reaction crash on the strip that killed a taxi driver and a passenger. how long was a partial human skull lying along the alameda creek trail in union city? authorities say it may have been more than a year. a forensics team combed the creekbed yesterday looking for any other remains, this after some teenagers found the skull on wednesday. investigators say the teeth showed some signs of dental work. that means it's highly unlikely that the skull fragment was from an old native american burial ground. uc-santa cruz police say a reported rape on campus was a hoax. a woman who is not a student claimed she was attacked on february 17. now investigators say she committed to make it all up. police are not revealing why she did it. the district attorney's office will decide whether to file charges against her. uptown oakland's first friday event for today will go on as scheduled despite safety concerns. one person was shot and killed and three others were injured

at last month's celebration. organizers say they have put additional safety measures in place. this is one of those days where you call your friends in new england or in denver and say, ha ha, we live in the bay area. [ laughter ] >> they have seen blizzards all kinds of things going on. here we have just had all kinds of sunshine and today, really probably the peak of the heat. we'll see some temperatures near mid-70s by the afternoon. this is it. then we have some changes toward the weekend. a lot of dense fog. the national weather service has just issued a dense fog advisory with thick fog at the coastline, bay and some spots inland. by the afternoon, this ridge right here will bring you plenty of sunshine and really strengthening for today before moving out of the way for the weekend. so enjoy the sunshine around the bay area. it's going to be something else in the afternoon. these temperatures running well above the average. in fact, some of these numbers over 10 degrees above average, about 73 in santa rosa. 72 in livermore. 67 degrees in san francisco.

we have some cooler weather on the way maybe a couple of raindrops over the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> and things are moving along nicely so far on this friday morning as far as incidents go. we haven't seen too many problems or accidents. we can see our traffic camera, nice change of pace, some cameras fogged out this morning. this is a live look at the dublin-pleasanton area. headlights westbound. this is a live look at milpitas. this is an example of what i'm talking about. we could actually see this camera earlier near the 880/237 interchange. despite the fog and low visibilities traffic is at the limit towards sunnyvale. westbound 580 through the altamont pass, usually slow so far not seeing much out of tracy near 205. it's actually the eastbound lanes we are seeing a little bit of slowing approaching greenville road. we have that overnight roadwork again several lanes blocked down to just one lane open until 9:00 this morning. by the way, bart 39 trains all

on time. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you, liz. 5:07. the spending cuts about a done deal. the white house and the battling parties in congress were not able to agree on an alternative plan so president obama has until 8:59 tonight pacific time to issue the order officially putting the cuts in effect. cbs news reporter susan mcginnis has more now on what we can all expect. >> reporter: congress left the capital thursday night for a long weekend killing any chance at avoiding across the board budget cuts, which kick in starting today. >> it is a day when soon people will be getting a pink slip. >> reporter: president obama has until midnight to sign the order mandating $85 billion in budget cuts. but before he signs, he will host a meeting with democratic and republican leaders in congress, leaders who spent thursday blaming each other. >> i'm happy to work with the president. but the house has done its job. it's time for the senate to do

their job. >> they've done nothing. they pulled back on something they -- they fall back on something they passed last congress. >> reporter: the cuts were to be so painful that both sides would agree to an alternative plan but neither side would budge on the main issue, raising tax revenue to pay down the debt. >> they're determined to protect the wealthy he was of the wealthy. >> and how much money do we want to steal from the american people to fund more government? i'm for no more! >> reporter: still, with more than half of the cuts aimed at the pentagon, there are some lawmakers ready to deal. >> i stand ready to put everything on the table to prevent what could be in the words of the departing secretary of defense, a devastating blow to our ability to defend this nation. >> reporter: but as of today, the cuts will be the law of the land until congress and the white house are willing to compromise. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> and the white house says it is willing to work with

congressional republicans but only if they compromise on the tax issue. san francisco's muni is kicking off a trial program today. thousands of low income youth can now ride muni buses and trains for free. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us live this morning with more on this much awaited program. >> reporter: good morning. today students, parents and school leaders can finally celebrate what's been a hard win for program advocates. the free muni for youth program took two years to get to this point letting low to moderate income youth between 5 and 17 years old ride muni for free with a valid clipper card. funding comes from the transit performance initiative grant. the pilot program will last 16 months. the total operating cost is $1.6 million. advocates say it will help 40,000 youth riders and families especially as rider

carquinez bridge to the maze in westbound 80 so no delays through richmond or berkeley. we'll let you know as soon as we see some brake lights. it's moving well. this is a live look at milpitas. thick fog blanketing some bay area roads including the golden gate bridge. give yourself some extra time. headlights moving southbound. they cleared overnight roadwork approaching the waldo tunnel. westbound 580 looking good from tracy to the altamont pass and livermore. the roadwork isn't causing a delay for the morning commute. this roadwork has been going on all week long eastbound 580 approaching north greenville road should be wrapping up around 9 a.m. mass is including our bart train so far on time. we are excited about the forecast. >> this is going to be something else but as you said, you have seen some of that

dense fog outside that's the big concern early on this morning. this morning, we are seeing dense fog in the bay area visibility to a half mannheim or quarter mile in the napa valley. this afternoon what a day it's going to be. the nicest day of the week. 70s inland, plenty of 60s, low 70s around the bay. leftover clouds at the coastline but sunshine too. the ridge of high pressure will slide eastward and you can see this system working its way toward the bay area. today the peak of the heat. then we'll cool down over the weekend. there is a chance we could see rain too. around the state if you are traveling today looking like a good day to do it, 70s into the central valley. well above the average at the bay.

francisco praised the president's actions. >> i think it's actually a good thing and, uhm, i think that people should not be restricted from whom they want to marry and i also admire the president for -- that his thought has evolved and that he is willing to move with that. >> antigay marriage advocates argue that californians voted to ban gay marriage and that states have a right to make their own laws. the supreme court will take on prop 8 at the end of the month. meanwhile, a record majority of californians now support same-sex marriage. a new field poll shows 61% approve. that's up from 51% in 2008 when prop 8 passed. the survey found support increasing across all age groups including nearly half of all seniors. as if gas isn't expensive enough already there's now a new tax hike here in the state of california beginning july 1 state excise tax going up 3.5 cents to 39.5 cents. that is the biggest increase in some three years now. analysts say california gas prices may have peaked though

for the first half of the year and should start heading the other way coming down very soon. stock market kicks off the month of march close to a record high. the dow was 16 points shy of an all-time high before a late day sell-off pushed it back as the impending government budget cuts cast a pall for some investors at least temporarily. the dow ended down about 20. the index is now 110 points away from a record. mcdonald's is clearing some space on its menu perhaps to make room for new items. the company says it will stop orange its fruit and walnut salad and chicken selection. it may get rid of the angus three pounder. the move comes after mcdonald's said last october it experienced its first decline in monthly sales in years. >> that's why they are getting rid of the third pounder. >> never heard of it. if you are looking for happiness turns out you have a good chance of finding it about

good morning. it's friday, march 1. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30. some breaking news out of sonoma county right now. the sheriff's department confirms there has been an officer-involved shooting in guerneville at oddfellows park road and riverside drive around 11:00 last night. the sheriff's department has not released many details only to tell us that no officers were injured. there are unconfirmed reports that this may have started as a kidnapping and we do have a crew on the way. we'll bring you more information as we get it. >> realso have live pictures from riverside county right now. check out these flames. firefighters continue to battle a fast-moving brush fire that broke out yesterday afternoon. so far the flames have scorched about 150 acres of heavy brush there. about 200 firefighters are still fighting those flames. several people in the area told to voluntarily evacuate their homes. and at this hour the fire only 20% contained but more gusty winds are expected later today. a lot of work to do.

this is happening in the rancho jurupa regional park in rivers. many with homes in the line of fire did not evacuate. instead they got to work next to the firefighters. >> the roof was on fire. i had to help put that out. he is working from the bottom. i'm working from the top and it was just team work. >> it's horrible. it's scary. people trying to knock on people's doors trying to let people know what's going on. the embers are now falling on the roof and everybody is kind of pulled together and grabbed hoses. >> authorities believe the fire may have been sparked by downed power lines in the area. as of late last night, about 1800 people are without power right now. the bullets flying and people ducking for cover. >> this morning we are hearing some of the chilling stories of bystanders caught in the crossfire of a santa cruz shooting that killed two detectives. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in santa cruz this morning. the death toll could have been much worse. >> reporter: it certainly could have. now, officers here in santa

cruz are planning to return to their normal patrols today. some of them came back to work but they didn't patrol the streets. they are trying to get somewhat back to normal here today though. in the meantime this memorial has grown even larger over the last couple of days. we are learning more stories of stray bullets falling around the area on tuesday. you're looking at a .45-caliber bullet fired by the suspect from his own gun. he pulled the trigger at his home on north branciforte avenue and it sailed over a playground. a busy street. it hit a woman on stanford avenue, a fifth of a mile away. all around the crime scene stories of close calls like that. a fire truck was used as a bullet shield. it caught four rounds. and we heard from a man who says the gunman's bullet missed him by two feet. >> he was just shooting. he had two guns, pop pop pop pop pop pop. >> and then the cops's guns got off and it got real loud.

that killed a taxi driver and his passenger. a florida man is feared dead after he was swallowed by a sing home. the 34-year-old was in his bedroom of his tampa home when the 100-foot-wide sinkhole opened under the house around 1:00 this morning. his brother tried to save him but deputies had to pull him from the house. the home is too unstable for rescue crews to work inside. listening devices and cameras were placed in the hole. but there's been no contact with that missing man. $85 billion in across-the- board spending cuts are a sure thing. the white house and republicans and democrats in congress were not able to agree on an alternate plan. president obama and congressional leaders will meet in an hour and a half but no real breakthrough is expected. as for the president, he too has yet to put forward a serious plan that could pass either the house or the

resigning. michael burns made that announcement yesterday. he will leave his post at the end of the year after 8.5 years on the job. he cites grewaling commute and health concerns for december parting. with pope benedict xvi retired, the catholic church is without a pope. a committee will handle decisions for the time being. monday catholic cardinals will begin a general congregation to discuss when to start their conclave, a series of votes to choose the next pope. sometimes it takes days because the pope isn't chosen until one candidate gets more than two- thirds of the vote. >> i think many of the cardinals from outside of rome would like it to continue a little longer so they get to know various people. >> white smoke rising from the sistine chapel is the traditional signal that the pope has been chosen. so all eyes on the vatican city. right. time now 5:40. how young is too young to learn

they have dense fog advisory in effect for the bay bridge and the carquinez bridge this morning. those are chp issued dense fog advisories. if you are coming towards the dublin interchange, this is a live look closer to tassajara. these headlights are moving westbound 580 approaching 680. not slow there but we are starting to see some delays out of tracy now from 205 out to vasco road and you can actually see it as well on our live traffic sensors. this is some overnight roadwork going against the commute. eastbound 580 approaching north greenville various lanes blocked until 9:00 this morning. 101 a little bit of slowing there, but otherwise guadalupe parkway 280 no delay through your downtown san jose exits. can't see much on the milpitas camera because of the fog. this is near the 880/237 interchange. you can see from the green on our sensors that so far everything is moving at the limit. however all the way towards sunnyvale, your south bay drive
